10 Houshold Uses for Bar Soap

Uncommon Solutions to Everyday Problems

By Courtney Curtis, About.com

Soap certainly isn’t what it used to be. Just a few decades ago the big decision was whether to go scented or not when you bought your bars, but now there’s a soap for anything and everything.

From body washes to liquid detergents, it’s hard to know what soap is meant for what. News to you or not, the tried and true bar of soap is just as effective, and much more environmentally friendly than any alternative you might find.

If you’re not yet convinced that solid cleansing is the way to go, though, consider everything else you can do with that miracle bar. Who knows, you might be so impressed you’ll start buying in bulk.

1. Freshen Your Luggage

Pack a bar of your favorite scented soap when you store luggage. It will deodorize the insides of your bags and keep them smelling fresh.

2. Remove Wallpaper Glue

Rid yourself of unwanted wallpaper glue by making a solution of soap and warm water and sponging said solution on your goop-covered walls.

3. Keep Garden Pests Away

You can keep garden bugs from eating away at your plant leaves by mixing soap with water and spraying the solution on the underside of each leaf.

4. Remove a Broken Light Bulb

Broken bulbs in your light fixture can be dangerous to remove, especially if they are CFLs. To make the task a little easier, use a bar of soap.

First, turn off the power. Then, slowly insert the corner of a dry bar of soap into the socket. Turn the bar a couple of time and the base will unscrew, leaving you unscathed.

5. Detect Gas Leaks

Find gas leaks by creating a soap and water solution and rubbing it on susceptible pipe joints. Bubbles forming indicates a leak.

6. Loosen Stuck Zippers

Faulty zipper? Run a bar of soap along the zipper’s teeth and give that zipper a go. Natural oils in soap will lubricate the piece and get things moving.

7. Un-Stick Old Furniture Drawers

If your cabinet, kitchen or dresser drawers are sticking, use a bar of soap to lubricate the bottom of the drawer and drawer supports.

8. Deodorize Your Car

If you’re looking for a cheap, green way to deodorize and freshen your car, hang soap from your rear-view mirror. If you prefer, you can wrap it in mesh or cheesecloth first.

9. Mark Fabrics

Use a thin sliver of soap to mark your fabrics for sewing. Not only can you skip out on buying special marking chalk, your DIY marks will wash right out.

10. Keep Camping Pots Looking New

If you’re going to be using pots and pans over an open flame, a bar of soap can save you from sulking over ruined kitchenware. Rub the bottom of your cast-iron pot with a bar of soap before cooking with it over an open flame to keep the bottom from turning black.

Ways to Raise Energy & Increase Vitality:

  • Stop drinking sodas and start drinking water and sparkling water instead (not tap water though!!) Drinking soda is simply not wise. The pH of soda is around 2. When the body’s ph is too acid, it fosters a breeding ground for bacteria, fungus & virus, and robs you of natural energy. In fact, get your ph levels alkaline for optimal health.
  • Limit sugar intake: Might sound bizarre but sugar gives you instant energy, but a few hours later, and in the long term, it will only make you more tired and cause other health problems..
  • When you feel stressed, focus on your breathing. Remember — in through your nose and out through your mouth. Slow and deep.
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes a day. It’s as easy as a walk around the block. Don’t exercise close to bed time.
  • Drink Green Tea instead of Coffee, or take a healthy energy supplement.
  • Sleep around 6 hours a night, but avoid sleeping more than 7-8 hours.
  • Stay away from Hydrogenated Oils. Read the ingredients on the back of products you buy in the supermarket.
  • Surround yourself with positive and supportive people.
  • Eat fruits with your breakfast and eat vegetables with your lunch and dinner.
  • Meditations or affirmations before you go to bed and when you wake up will charge you with the right energy.
  • Listen to your favorite song whenever you need a pick-me-up.
  • Eat breakfast. It will increase your energy and productivity at work.
  • Don’t be too busy for lunch. Researchers agree that performance scores plunge when people miss lunch.
  • Take short breaks throughout the day. Get up from your chair and take a little walk. Stop looking at the computer screen. Stretch. Go get a cold drink of water. Short breaks help you refocus and re-energize.
  • Check for food intolerances or allergies: Most people with low grade food allergies and sensitivities are unaware that they have them because the symptoms are as subtle as low energy and difficulty losing weight.
  • Eat protein at every meal: One of the most important ways to keep your blood sugar balanced and energy levels high is to include protein at every meal, breakfast and snacks included. The best protein sources include fish, organic meat, chicken, eggs, yogurt, and whey protein powder.
  • Make sure you’re getting enough key nutrients, such as magnesium, B-complex, and Omega 3s for optimal energy and health levels.
  • Check for yeast issues in the intestines: Gas, bloating, and carbohydrate or sugar cravings are often caused by yeast growth which in turn causes low energy levels.
  • Make sure you do not have any medical conditions that can cause fatigue. These include low thyroid function, low iron, high iron (hemochromatosis), and a range of other ailments which can be determined by blood tests.
  • Maintain emotional stability. This is important to avoid stresses to the body. Learn ways of promoting healthy states of mind. This will always serve you best and militate against disease which when you break it down is a result of dis - ease (when you are not at ease.) Try to remember all the reasons to be grateful in your life, because no matter what, there are people much worse off.
